Our 9th Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Preseason Luncheon was a huge success! Thank you to our sponsors, guests, volunteers, and all of our generous supporters who helped us exceed our goal, raising over $85,000 to support the mission of the American Cancer Society. Champion Award: ACME Markets

We're thrilled to honor ACME Markets with this year's Champion Award, which is presented annually to an individual or company for their dedication to the fight against cancer. ACME has supported Coaches vs. Cancer for more than a decade. Accepting on behalf of ACME, Bill Crosby, VP of Operations. 

Dean Smith Award: George Raveling

The US Basketball Writers Association will be honoring George Raveling with their Dean Smith Award at this year's Preseason Luncheon. The Dean Smith Award recognizes individuals for more than just wins and losses, and is presented annually to an individual in college basketball who embodies the spirit and values of Coach Smith.

Special Guest: John Feinstein

You won't want to miss our special guest John Feinstein, sportswriter, author and sports commentator, who will provide insight on the upcoming season and lead our Q&A with the Philly 6 coaches. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Preseason Luncheon might look different this year, but our passion and commitment to fight cancer is unchanged. The health and safety of all our guests and participants is our number one goal.

**Proof of Vaccine or Covid-19 Negative Test Required**
The health and safety of our immune compromised supporters,  and all of our guests, volunteers, staff and community at-large are of the utmost importance. Therefore, all individuals attending this year’s Coaches vs. Cancer Preseason Luncheon will be required to show proof of vaccination or negative Covid-19 test, which will be checked upon arrival at registration. 

  • For guests who plan to show proof of vaccination: guests must be fully vaccinated, with a second vaccine date on or before Monday, October 11, 2021. Physical vaccination cards, photos of vaccination cards, and state approved apps are all acceptable forms of vaccination proof. 

  • For guests who plan to show a negative COVID-19 test: the test must be within 72 hours of the event, taken on or after Friday, October 22, 2021


We appreciate your understanding and if you are unable to attend, we hope you will continue to support our mission by donating. 

Please read on for important details, and review the COVID-19 waiver prior to the Luncheon.

If you are feeling sick or have been recently exposed to someone who recently tested positive for COVID-19, you should stay home. People who have underlying health conditions or are taking medications that weaken the immune system, should talk to their healthcare provider before attending large gatherings.

Some additional things to note about this year's Luncheon:​

  • The Hilton Philadelphia respectfully requests all guests wear masks in hotel common spaces and outside of the ballroom.

  • Guests are encouraged to wear masks until they are seated at their table

  • Masks will be provided upon arrival if you do not have one.

Recognize COVID-19 Symptoms -The CDC has identified the symptoms of a COVID-19 infection. If you have one or more of these symptoms on the day of the event, please stay home. If you are waiting for COVID-19 test results or have had close contact with a person who has tested positive for or who has COVID-19 symptoms, please stay home unless you get a negative test result before the event.

Your Safety is Our Number One Priority - The COVID-19 virus and its variants are highly contagious. Some people infected with these viruses get severely ill, become hospitalized or die. Event attendees acknowledge the risk of exposure to the COVID-19 virus, assume all such risk, and the American Cancer Society, Inc., shall not be held liable.

Protect Our Community- Help to protect our community. Please consider getting vaccinated or a negative COVID test before attending this event if you are not vaccinated. Please report to Ali Gill (, 215-446-5677) if you later contract COVID-19 and believe you could have received or spread the virus at the event.
